Let’s start this varietally-based edition out with – SAUVIGNON BLANC: In France battle lines are drawn and a war has started in Sancerre (Loire Valley) as to who is allowed, and who should be banned from growing the region’s famous white grape variety. Last month, in typical French resistance style, in the middle of the night, vandals (protectors of the status quo) uprooted around 5,000-6,000 young Sauvignon Blanc vines from a vineyard in the village of Buer. This has come about due to the EU rules which allow the planting of Sauvignon Blanc outside the AOC (Appellation d’origine Controlee). If the outsiders manage to keep their vines in the ground for long enough, the resultant wines will sell under the IGP Val de Loire rather than the AOC.
