Grape & Wine Report Card 2014-2015

The OIV (International Organisation of Vine & Wine) recently reported that the global area under vines in 2014-2015 was 7,534,000 hectares (ha). Spain is No.1 with just over one million hectares, BUT France (780,000 ha) has been usurped as No.2 by China, with 820,000 ha.  The China figure has been called into question from time to time as it has been suggested that their figures include all grape acreage rather than just wine grape acreage.  Whilst it is not possible to verify this issue, given the current level of wine consumption in China compared to the level of wine imports, it would tend to strongly suggest that their statistics do include all grape plantings rather than wine grapes only.  Either way, China is certainly growing rapidly as a wine producing nation. Read More...
